”In 2012 English artist Ryan Gander presented I Need Some Meaning I Can Memorize (The Invisible Pull) in Kassel, an intervention on the ground floor of the Fridericianum, the main exhibition space at dOCUMENTA(13): a current of air blew across the almost entirely empty space, hitting the visitors without any distinguishable rhythm, and without offering any evidence of its meaning or its origin. With this windblown emptiness, Gander challenges the sense of satisfaction and security of moving within the knit of recognizable references that the public seeks when viewing art. Without provocation, indeed acting almost within the aesthetic practice of the contemplation of the void, the artist made a representation of art in its purest manifestation, that of an experience, of something that happens, obligating its own interlocutors to complete of its meaning.”
